The display of items from the Ramseyer-Northern Bible Society Museum Collection for the month of December, 1994, will celebrate the Jewish and Christian holidays of Hanukkah and Christmas, using the Bible illustrations of Gustave Dor'e. Dor'e, a French artist who lived from 1832 to 1883, produced an enormous number of illustrations for books, at one time employing over 40 wood carvers to make the cuts from which his pictures were printed. His illustrations for the Bible were used in many Family Bibles in many languages during the latter part of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The quotations from the Bible accompanying the illustrations are taken from a variety of English translations from 1611 to 1994. They include the King James Version of 1611, a 1992 translation by Eugene Peterson entitled "The Message", and the 1994 volume of the Black Bible Chronicles Series, entitled "Rappin' with Jesus". The facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible, which is always on display in the UMD Library, is open to the story of the Nativity as told in the Gospel of Luke, and with it is a Roman type version of the Vulgate Latin, as well as an English translation.
